BIKING
Biking
is an important recreational and professional sport in Costa Rica, it must
because of the rugged terrains found, the countless paths and the savannahs
that offer a great deal of opportunities for mountain and speed biking. Moreover,
please don’t expect to find biking trails in the city; that’s
why there are more appealing options for mountain and off.-track rides. Every
year, the country hosts the “Vuelta Ciclística de Costa Rica”
(Tour of Costa Rica) an important biking competition for younger cyclist who
are aiming to become professional, and come from different countries in Latin
America compete in different stages and cross the country from North to South.
Also, as mountain biking becomes more popular, several competitions have gained
and importance among Costa Rican enthusiasts such as the “Ruta de Los
Conquistadores” (The Conquerors route) competition that goes off the
beaten track with a medium to high level of difficulty, suitable for the adventurous
ones.
If enjoy the outdoors, a biking tour is a great way to get up close with
nature, to see the ways of life of the people in the small towns, and probably,
have a good chance to meet the “ticos” (Costa Ricans) you will
find along the way. Magnificent volcanoes, lush vegetation, incredible biodiversity,
waterfalls, river crossings are just a few of the amazing things you will
encounter in the different biking routes and trips.
Due to Costa Rica’s topography there are opportunities for bikers in
every level, from beginners to experts and trips can be combined with other
outdoor and adventure activities such as rafting, canopy tours, among many

If you want to bring you own wheels, you’re most welcome to do so,
just check with the airline what their regulations are in this respect. Otherwise,
you will find bike rental options in most of the towns in the country; the
quality of the equipment available is improving all the time.
Mountain Bike Central Valley Routes and Tours:
1. Puriscal / University for Peace Route:
This
one day Central Valley tour departs from San José heading east on the
Highway to Santa Ana and Ciudad Colón. The biking trip starts in the
dirt road to Ciudad Colón. Along the way, there are incredible mountain
views. This means that most of the route is down hill, however, you will also
find some up hills several times We bike until reaching Puriscal, a small
town located in the Continental Divide, famous for it’s church (its
believed that it’s sinking a few centimeters every year). As we arrive
to the Turrucares intersection we turn right heading towards Ciudad Colon,
where we will admire the “University for Peace” a non profit university
created to “provide humanity with an international institution of higher
education for peace with the aim of promoting among all human beings the spirit
of understanding, tolerance and peaceful coexistence”.

2. Pejibaye River Route:
We
leave the city heading toward the city Of Cartago (First capital city of Costa
Rica) and stop for breakfast in Cervantes, a small town en route. Later the
tour begins at Angostura’s hydroelectric plant; biking through sugar
and coffee plantations. The route is flat with a mountain segment of dense
jungle and up hills. Finally, we arrive to Pejibaye town, area of sugar cane
and coffee plantation workers and then on a flat road we stop at “La
Posa” a natural pool where you will have a chance to refresh in its
fresh water. After the tour, a typical lunch will be offered at a local restaurant.

are recommended only for experienced bikers. +

Recommendations:
It is important that you are physically fit for these tours and that you
have previous mountain biking experience. The difficulty of the tours depends
on your own level, so let us know if you prefer an easier (class I-II) or
a more difficult (class III-IV) mountain biking tour and we will arrange the
specific routes and itinerary.
Costa Rican topography is very irregular and there is a lot of climbing;
our recommendation is that you train a little before taking this tour and
that you visit your physician for a complete check up before departure.
When taking a biking trip on your own make sure you are provided with the
necessary equipment including helmet and gloves (if you prefer you can bring
your own) and always make sure that the company has the necessary insurance
policy covered by Costa Rica’s National Institute of Insurances (INS
for its initials in Spanish).
Rental Bikes are usually equipped with front suspension, toe-clip pedals,
water bottles and case. You might like to bring your own pack and pedals.
