TAMBOR & MALPAIS (NICOYA PENINSULA)
Hotels | Tours
This
is a vast area with endless isolated beaches. The most popular beach towns
are: Montezuma (sort of a Hippie town), Mal País (excellent for surfing),
Carrillo (calm blue waters with good snorkeling) and Sámara (nightlife!).
The road system is, unfortunately, very poor so communication between these
areas is only possible with a four-wheel drive vehicle and during the Dry
Season.
Malpaís & Santa Teresa beaches are the country’s newest
hot spots, even visited by Hollywood movie & TV stars. They offer miles
of isolated beaches, great surf and new housing options ranging from simple
lodges to fancy resorts.
A Costa Rican music band named Malpaís, after this town, has helped
put it’s name in the tourist map and has created a new era for Costa
Rican pop / folkloric music.
Climate: This is a transitional area between the dry forest and the
rain forest, this means that it rains a little more than in the North Pacific
and a little less than in the Central Pacific. Temperature ranges somewhere
in the 80's, as in most of the coastal areas of the country.
What to bring: When packing keep in mind the high temperatures and
bright sun. Hats, sunglasses and long-sleeved cotton shirts are important
when visiting parks in the area. Shorts keep your legs breezy as you hit your
stride on the trail. Comfortable trail shoes for the parks and sandals for
everywhere else should help keep you stay comfortable.
