TORTUGUERO (NORTH CARIBBEAN)
Hotels | Tours
Tortuguero
– a name that could be translated as “Region of Turtles”
is located in the Northeast area of the Caribbean coast of the country, often
called the “Amazon of Costa Rica” because of its network of lakes
and canals with rich vegetation, flora and fauna. A must see for the nature
lovers and birdwatchers!
Land of incredible biological diversity; where at night, from July to September,
impressive Green Sea Turtles nest on the beach. A tropical sanctuary for more
than 300 different species of birds and natural habitat for an amazing array
of wildlife; such as monkeys, crocodiles and iguanas, among many others. Discover
the lush vegetation that abounds in the midst of the Rainforest.
Getting in and out of Tortuguero is an adventure itself, as there are no
roads to get there. Visitors must take a boat and travel through the rivers
and canals to get there, or can easily reach the area by a 30 minute domestic
flight. Due to this reason, Mawamba Lodge offers an all inclusive package
(except from alcoholic drinks) that includes all transportation, lodging,
meals and tours in the area.
The 22-mile stretch of beach extending south from the mouth of the Tortuguero
river is the most important nesting site for Atlantic Green Sea Turtles throughout
the entire Caribbean. These marvelous marine reptiles remain essentially unchanged
from their ancestors that once shared the seas with pelagic dinosaurs.
What to bring: Since the weather is extremely tropical on this coast,
it is a wise traveler who packs a hat and sunblock. Clothing should be cotton
and light colored (Note: If you’re visiting Tortuguero during turtle
season you must bring a black shirt and pants to go on the turtle tour). Keep
in mind that there is rain throughout the year on the Caribbean coast so pack
a light anorak and some boots.
Climate: This area of the country is generally hot and experiences
quite a bit of rain. Temperatures hover generally between the mid to high
80's Fahrenheit. As much as 400 centimeters of rain has been recorded during
one year. Since the coast has the advantage of refreshing ocean breezes, the
weather is bearable. "Since the changing factor is rain, this is how
it falls:
- January and November are transitional periods with higher winds and some
rainy days.
- February through May are generally sunny with a little rain.
- December is the month of heaviest rainfall.
- Mid August through the first part of November is summer with the least
rain.
