6 Packing Hacks for Short-Term Housing

Moving can be a hassle, especially when it comes to packing and storing all that you need. Corporating housing providers, like Travelers Haven, will often supply the furniture, housewares, and other amenities in your new place. But your clothes, toiletries, important documents, and personal items are up to you.

Here are a few essential tips to help you prepare for your next move into short-term housing. Some of these tactics may seem odd, but trust me, they work. (I’ve used these maneuvers a time or two!)

Bag up your clothes.

Take a drawstring trash bag, pull it around hanging clothes from the bottom-up, then close the drawstring around the hangers. This way you can transfer an entire closet without folding a single top. (Extra tip: Do it one trip by stacking all your bags on a Dolly.)

Wheel your books and files.

The contents of your bookshelves and filing cabinets can get pretty heavy when you put them all into a box. Instead of risking torn cardboard, use a suitcase. That way you can roll those bulky items around instead of lugging a heavy box.

Spill-proof your toiletries.

The last thing you want is your lotion or hair products spilling everywhere. Instead, place plastic wrap over the opening underneath the cap and make sure it’s tightly closed. No mess! (Extra tip: Place plastic wrap around the cap, too, for double security.)

Keep your jewelry de-tangled.

So much time is wasted on pulling apart knotted balls of mixed jewelry. Keep it all organized by putting an old egg crate to use. Separate your necklaces, bracelets, rings, and earrings into each section. (Extra tip: Use a toilet roll for longer necklaces so it doesn’t get tangled on itself.)

Easily access your hair tools.

Hair tools are tricky to pack because boxes are often too big and you sometimes need them while you’re on the road. Instead, store them in an oven mitt for easy transportation. (Extra tip: This will also help protect the tools surroundings if you have to use it and pack it up right away.)

Make your pet happy.

We can’t forget our furry friends! Make sure your pet’s tags are up-to-date; request copies of your vet records; and be sure food, toys, and meds are easily accessible during the move. (Extra tip: Don’t forget to give them plenty of love and plan for frequent bathroom breaks along the way.)
