Team Member Tuesday with Emily Pancake, Software Engineer

We’re highlighting Emily Pancake, Software Engineer in this week’s Team Member Tuesday. “The best part about Travelers Haven is the genuine happiness of the people that work here. A lot of companies have leaders who are constantly saying how great the company is, which doesn’t seem genuine if the rest of the company doesn’t echo that sentiment. People that work at Travelers Haven are genuine when they show excitement related to our company and our values, from our leaders to individual contributors,” said Emily.

Emily moved to Denver when she was 7 years old and has been living in Colorado ever since. She has a bachelor’s degree in Humanities, a Master’s in Library and Information Science, and graduated from Galvanize’s Web Development Program in 2018. In her early career she had the honor of administering elections, coordinating everything related to mail-ballots in Denver County. She also spent 4 years as a technical writer working with global product development teams in the medical device industry. It was in this role where she was fortunate to work with a lot of software engineering teams and determined that was the direction she wanted to grow into. She went to school, got the skills and has been a software engineer for 2.5 years. She focuses on frontend development in React but spends an equal amount of time doing backend work in Rails.

What is the best part about working on the engineering team?

My favorite thing about the engineering team is the autonomy I get in how I approach problems. My team trusts me to figure out the best solution to any challenge. So, a lot of the joy in my job comes from trying things and failing, and then trying again until I’m really proud of what I present for final review by the team. And even then, often as a team we work together to make it better.

Where’s one place you wish you could travel?

One place I wish I could travel? Anywhere right now. The spa? Just kidding… I really want to go to Buenos Aires. I love exploring huge cities. Tokyo, Mexico City, Mumbai and Bogotá have been some of my favorite trips. Buenos Aires has such a diversity of culture I would love to go explore it for a week at least!

What is your favorite quote?

My favorite quote is from Ken Kesey’s One Flew Over The Cuckoo’s Nest, “It’s the truth, even if it didn’t happen.” It helps me to remember that other people’s perspectives are just as valid as my own, and very little in this world is black and white.
